Megan and Michael showed up right on time Saturday for our grilling party. We stocked up on beers and wine, we didn’t know which they preferred. I had made a vegetable and cheese tray assortment to go along with the chicken that Daryl was grilling. Everything looked perfect and smelled amazing. Hosting shin digs like this was something I thoroughly loved.
“The food smells great,” Michael said to Daryl as he walked up to the grill. “What’s your secret?”
I didn’t listen to what Daryl said in response because Megan handed me a bag, “This is for you.”
“You didn’t need to do anything special.”
“Nonsense,” she waved me off, “I never show up empty handed. I hope you like this.”
It didn’t feel like wine, it was far too light, which made me more curious as to what it could be. I untied the bow and opened the bag, and when I looked inside, I started laughing. “Oh my god,” I said.
“You don’t have one already do you?” Megan asked with the most serious tone I could ever picture.
“No, I don’t. I’ve never seen one up close and personal before, ever.”
Megan gasped, “What, never?”
I shook my head, “I have been shy my whole life, you think I would go into one of those stores and risk being seen?”
Her laughter continued, “Brenda, you know if you are inside those stores and see someone you know, they are there too. They can’t judge you anymore than you could judge them.”
I shook my head, “That is not how I see it, nope.”
“You and I are going to have to go to one of these stores, you have no idea what you’re missing out on.” Megan walked over to the table an put a few pieces of fruit on a plate and grabbed a beer out of the cooler, “You got to live a little, right?”
My shoulders shrugged, “I suppose.”
“You really have never seen one in person? Do you want me to show you how to use it?” Megan took another drink of her beer and put a couple grapes and blueberries into her mouth.
