Blood Series: Yellow - Chapter Thirty-Three
The doctor came into the room with his clipboard in hand. Adara watched him review her chart, or what she assumed was her chart, as he made silent notes in his head. The nurse came in shortly after him and handed him a pad, and they both looked straight at Adara.
“How are you feeling this evening? How is your strength?” The calm and casual tone gave some reassurance to Adara that there wasn’t anything wrong, even though she couldn’t help but feel like they were hiding something.
“I really feel much better. My head doesn’t hurt and,” she placed her hand on her belly and rubbed, “I really think this little one is going to be okay.”
The doctor moved his head in an approving nod as she spoke, then looked to the nurse and signaled her out of the room. He moved to the chair and sat down. When the door was shut, he set the clip board down and looked at Adara, his relief radiating off of him.
“You need to be examined again, but I don’t want to proceed without His Majesty present. We think you are going to be okay based on these latest reports, but only time will tell. If your exam concurs with our prediction, you can go home first thing in the morning.”
“Oh that’s wonderful; I’m so ready to go home.” The doctor cut her off; he held up his finger and moved it back and forth.
“Not so fast, it’s going to be very calm and quiet for you for the next few weeks. While you are safe to head home, we do not think you should leave bed except for meals and bathroom needs.”
“So you’re saying I will be bed ridden for a few weeks.”
He slowly nodded his head, “Yes, but actually I would prefer you not leave bed for more than two hours a day at most, and no stressful activities for the remainder of the pregnancy.”
“I can do that, just sit around and let everyone wait on me. Got it doc! But I would prefer you to examine me now, even if Zayn isn’t here. He will want a decision made so we can start making plans as soon as we leave here.”
The doctor stood from the chair and walked out of the room. Adara was puzzled about why he wouldn’t even reply. A few moments passed, and she began getting restless. If they want me stress free, this is not the way to start, she thought.
“Ms. Malak?” one of the nurses said as she opened the door.
“Yes?” Adara said as she pushed up in the bed, leaning forward anxiously.
“The doctor will be right in. He’s on the phone with the king, and when he’s through he will see to you.”
“Thank you,” Adara said as she leaned back in the bed.
On the phone with the king, great. Will my life always be like this, whatever I want only if Zayn approves? Adara didn’t want to think about that at present. In the grand scheme of things, that was one battle best settled on another day outside of the hospital bed. She supposed she could understand why the doctor would want to inform Zayn of what was going on and gain his approval.
“Sorry about that. All right, we will go ahead with the exam,” the doctor said as two nurses bustled into the room. The women busied themselves with gathering medical tools and setting them on the tray while the doctor adjusted the sheets at the foot of her bed.
“Go ahead and slide down here, and place your feet in the stirrups. We are going to only be a moment, and then you can rest for the remainder of the evening.”
Adara scooted down and did as instructed. She hated this part about being a woman, being exposed. But like most women, all one could do was just grin and bear it. She heard them whispering, and if she wanted, she could listen. She really didn’t want to hear but just be told that everything was okay.
“All right, you can reposition yourself. The cervix has resealed enough that I am comfortable to let you go home tomorrow with the king. Chances are you will deliver your bent early. So that’s another reason why bed rest is so important. No more than two hours a day out of bed and that includes all meals and bathroom visits. Remember that, all right?”
“I understand, and I’m sure you have told Zayn all of this already. I know he will take good care of me.”
“I have, and he will. I’ll let you rest for the night.”
With those final words, the three of them left the room, and Adara sat there alone in her thoughts. She knew she’d just spoken to her omm on the phone, but she couldn’t help it. Zayn wanted to meet her, and since she was going home, she wanted her omm there. She was lucky her phone was sitting within arm’s length, because she would have been too scared to get out of bed alone. Leaning over, she picked up the receiver and dialed the number.
“Hey, Mama. Yeah, I know. I just wanted to ask you something really quick.” Adara paused to listen to what her omm had to say. “No, Mama, I promise everything is fine; really, that’s why I am calling. The doctor just left.” Her omm started to ramble again, and Adara just laughed.
“Mama, calm down and listen. Yes, the baby is fine, and the doctor said that I get to go home tomorrow for sure. He even cleared it with Zayn.” Adara nodded in agreement to her omm on the other end of the phone, who also thought it was extremely chauvinistic of the doctor to ask Zayn’s permission.
“Omm, focus please. I’m going home tomorrow, and I would like you to be there with me. Zayn wants to meet you officially, and I want you to help me settle in. I haven’t been in his home since everything happened, and it would mean a lot if you came.”
Adara let out a sigh of relief when her omm agreed. “All right, see you tomorrow. Yes, I love you too.”
She hung the phone up and adjusted her bed with the remote. She was going to try and get some sleep. Today had really stressed her out!
